ABSTRACT

Introduction: chronotype is the natural predisposition of each individual to experience peaks of energy or moments of rest according to their circadian rhythm. Individuals may have morning, evening, or intermediate chronotypes that may be related to the development of depression. Objective: to determine the existence of an association between chronotype and depressive symptomatology in a sample of adults. Methodology: this observational, descriptive, and exploratory study was conducted in August 2023. Adults of both sexes were included in this study. Sociodemographic data were collected, and participants answered the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire by Horne and Östberg to assess chronotype, and the 2-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) to assess depressive symptoms. Descriptive statistics were used for all the variables. For inferential statistics, the chi-squared test was used with a confidence level of 95 %. Odds ratio was used to quantify the relationships. Results: a total of 105 people participated in the study, 58 % of whom were women. The mean age of the sample was 29.4 ± 11.6 years. Sixty-nine percent of the sample presented the morning chronotype, while 31 % presented the evening chronotype. It was found that 31 % of the participants scored positively for depression (PHQ-2 ≥ 3). A relationship was found between chronotype and PHQ-2 cutoff points (p=0.036). An OR=2.5 (95 % CI 1.05-5.95) was found in favor of the evening chronotype for the development of depression. Conclusion: almost seven out of ten participants had a morning chronotype, whereas three out of ten were positive for depression. Individuals with evening chronotypes are more likely to develop depressive symptoms than those with morning chronotypes.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this research was to analyze the relationship between motor coordination (CM) and Body Mass Index in Chilean schoolchildren between 7 and 9 years of age. The study was observational cross-sectional, correlational and descriptive study. 180 students of both sexes were evaluated (90 women aged 8.4 ± 0.9 years and 90 men aged 8.5 ± 0.9 years). Anthropometric weight and height variables were measured and the Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated. The CM was evaluated using the battery of Körperkoordinationstest Für Kinder (KTK). The results showed that in the lateral transposition, the normal weight group outperforms the overweight and Obesity group (p˂0.05) for women. For men, in monopedal jumps, the normal weight group also outperformed the obesity group (p˂0.05). In addition, when analyzing the differences between the sexes, it was noted that women had a higher score than men in the rear balance (p˂0.05). On the other hand, men had performed better in lateral jumps, lateral transposition and the total KTK score (p˂0.05). In conclusion, the study found that there was a lower CM index in schoolchildren with a high BMI, and that there were significant differences between men and women in terms of balance, lateral jumps, lateral transposition, and the total score of the KTK test.

ABSTRACT

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the neurodevelopmental disorders with the highest prevalence, estimated at 5%, in the pediatric population. The objective of this review was to synthesize the existing technologies used to evaluate, diagnose, and treat ADHD symptoms in the pediatric population. This is a preliminary, integrative review, which included articles published in 3 specialized databases, PsycINFO, Eric and Web of Science, between 2005 and 2021. It was found that classical diagnostic tests are divided into psychometric tests, biomarker assessment and eye movements. On the other hand, the tests that use technology are those for evaluation and diagnosis (DIDE, MOXO, AULA, AQUIARUM and BRAINGAZE) and those used in therapy (SINCROLAB, PSIOUS, SISTEMA eTNS and several based-on neurofeedback). The modern technologies offer a certain percentage of sensitivity with low investment, they do not require expensive equipment and the preparation of the psychologist or medical professional for their application is relatively simple and accessible, since it comes as a complement in the purchase of most of the programs. To continue examining their effectiveness, it is recommended to continue assessing these tools with more robust methodologies, in large clinical populations, and this should be a priority for future research.

ABSTRACT

Background: Irritability, as a trans dimensional symptom, is present in several mental disorders. This study investigated the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Brief Irritability Test (BITe). Subjects and Methods: The recruitment has been performed through an online survey launched through common social media (Facebook, Twitter) and messaging apps (WhatsApp, Telegram) from 1st to 31st May 2022. Subjects included were individuals ≥18 years old of age of both sexes. 1920 individuals were rated for the validation analysis. The BITe has been translated into Spanish and validated through confirmatory factor analysis. Participants have been also scored with the Aggression Questionnaire (AQ). Results: Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test was adequate (KMO=0.880) and sphericity tested significantly (p<0.001). The confirmatory analysis confirmed that the scale is one- imensional. The model adjustment was good, according to all fit indices. Cronbach's alpha also confirmed an excellent internal consistency (α=0.91). Scores between the two scales (the BITe and the AQ) have shown a good convergence (r=0.512; p<0.001). Conclusions: The Spanish version of the BITe is a unidimensional scale of five Likerttype items that shows good internal validity and high reliability, which implies that this version has excellent psychometric properties for both male and female Spanish-speakers

ABSTRACT

Objective: This systematic review aims to summarize the findings of studies that investigated the risk, precocity and intensity of psychosis in cannabis users, taking into account the status of legalization and/or decriminalization of cannabis use in different countries. Methodology: Articles published up to May 2018 were included, in English, Portuguese and Spanish, all extracted from the PubMed and SciELO databases, respecting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: 19 studies from 18 countries were included. The relationship of cannabis use and the onset of psychotic symptoms was sufficiently substantiated. However, there was no data that supported an increase in the risk, precocity or intensity of psychosis in cannabis users from countries with higher levels of legalization/decriminalization of cannabis use to the date of the present study. Conclusion: The use of cannabis is associated with the development of psychosis. So far, there is no data pointing to an increase in the precocity, risk or intensity of psychosis in cannabis users, due to the legalization or decriminalization of the use of cannabis. However, the absence of data to date does not exclude these possibilities, since none of the studies analyzed in this review specifically assessed the effects of legalization/decriminalization policies on those outcomes. Therefore, prospective studies focused on the effects of legalization or decriminalization policies should be conducted in countries such as Canada, Spain, the United States of America (some states), the Netherlands, and Uruguay.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: the COVID-19 pandemic has increased anxiety cases and caused big modifications in the way medical care is provided. Objective: to describe the epidemiological characteristics of anxiety disorders treated through telepsychiatry in a University Hospital. Methodology: observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study. A non-random purposive sampling was performed. Electronic records of patients treated in the Psychiatry Department of the "Hospital de Clínicas", Paraguay, between February and May 2021 were used. ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Introduction: one of the strategies considered when dealing with mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic was the use of telepsychiatry. Objective: to determine whether urban or rural origin is associated with the development of depressive disorders in patients consulting through telepsychiatry in a referral hospital in Paraguay. Methodology: observational, descriptive of cross-association, and cross-sectional study. A non-probabilistic sampling of consecutive cases was carried out. Electronic records of patients treated at the Psychiatry Service of the "Hospital de Clínicas" of the "Universidad Nacional de Asunción" between March and June 2021 were used. Descriptive statistics were applied for all variables. For the comparison of groups with nominal qualitative variables, the Chi-square test was used, calculating the odds ratio according to sex and area of residence, considering a p˂0.05 as significant. Student's t-test was also used to compare a nominal variable with a quantitative variable. Results: 907 clinical records were analyzed, finding 92 patients with depressive spectrum disorders. When analyzing the association between rural and urban environment with the presence of a depressive episode, a significant association was found between rural environment and the diagnosis of a depressive disorder (OR=7.81, χ2=63.33, p<0.001). Conclusion: our results do not agree with previous studies related to the subject. This could be due, at least in part, to the impact that social and economic conditions have on the development of mental disorders, such as depression.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRAC Introduction: The Skin Picking Impact Scale (SPIS) is a self-report rating scale that assess the psychosocial impact of excoriation disorder. In this study the SPIS was translated into Spanish and its reliability was measured. Similarly, its short version (SPIS-S) has been translated and tested. Methodology: The recruitment has been performed through a survey launched on social media. All subjects were older than18 years and self-reported being diagnosed with an excoriation disorder. 281 individuals were rated for the validation analysis. SPIS has been translated into Spanish and validated through an exploratory and confirmatory factorial analysis. Participants have been also scored with the Skin Picking Scale-Revised (SPS-R). Results: On factor at the exploratory factorial analysis has a raw eigenvalue greater than 1, with 65.5% of total variance. The confirmatory analysis confirmed that the scale is one-dimensional. Cronbach's alpha also confirmed a good internal consistency (α=0.934 for the SPIS and α=0.882 for the SPIS-S). Scores between the two scales (SPIS and the SPS-R) have shown a good convergence (r=0.592, p<0.0001). Conclusion: The Spanish version of SPIS and its short version show good psychometric properties and adequately reproduce the one-dimensional model of the original English version.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The CAPE Vulnerability Index is a global foreign policy index that identifies the countries to be prioritise for foreign aid. It offers an evidenced, structured and reasoned approach to using aid in bi-lateral agreements with mental health as a foundation. The present version is specifically design for Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, which comprises of 33 countries. Objectives: To identify the countries to be prioritized for foreign aid, through the LAC version of the CAPE Vulnerability Index (CAPE VI-LAC). Materials and methods: Like with the CAPE Vulnerability Index global version we consider various indices or measures at country level that indicate health status or what may influence health. For the analysis we score the worst 20 countries. We used 26 internationally available and validated indicators to explore and perform the analysis. Results: The figures and map show the 32 countries that featured in the worst 20 in at least one indicator and also the worst 12 within the CAPE VI-LAC as a whole. Of the 33 LAC countries only St Kitts and Nevis did not feature in any of the worst 20 countries at any time. Conclusion: What we can conclude with a great degree of certainty that the worst 12 scoring countries are possibly fragile states; countries where the Governments do not have complete control or authority, are often repressive and corrupt, participate in serious human rights abuses and are characterised by political instability of various forms, disadvantage by the extremes of climate changes, extreme poverty, inequality, social and ethnic divisions, unable to provide basic services and suffer from pockets of insurgency in the form of terrorism, which are often violent and brutal. Governments, aid donors, regional organizations, and mental health professionals and associations should work together in order to address these situations.

ABSTRACT

Vitamin C supplementation is important for the growth and development of bullfrog tadpoles under optimum water temperature conditions. Therefore, an experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of vitamin C supplementation on the diet of bullfrog tadpoles at a low temperature. A total of 480 tadpoles with a mean weight of 0.078 g were distributed in 12 aquariums each containing 40 L of water in a closed water recirculation system. The experimental design was entirely randomized with four treatments (0, 150, 300, and 600 mg kg-1 of L-ascorbic acid monophosphate) and three replicates. The productive performance was measured by the weight gain, feed conversion, diet consumption, protein efficiency, carcass yield, hepatosomatic index, viscerosomatic index, visceral fat index, dry matter, and ethereal carcass extract. The water temperature during the experimental period was 21.74 ± 0.43 °C. Vitamin C supplementation did not influence carcass yield and viscerosomatic index. However, there was a quadratic effect of vitamin C supplementation on the weight gain, apparent feed conversion, protein efficiency, visceral fat index, hepatosomatic index, and ethereal carcass extract. Based on these results, bullfrog tadpoles should be supplemented with 600 mg vitamin C kg-1 of the diet when subjected to water temperatures of around 22 °C.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The present study aimed to study the reproduction of the Amazon turtle (Podocnemis expansa) through the evaluation of the reproductive parameters of adult females. This study was carried out in the Crixás-Açu River, municipality of Mundo Novo, state of Goiás, Brazil. In September, the biometrics of 20 females were evaluated during the spawning period. Their nests were marked for subsequent evaluation of hatchlings, measuring the distances of each nest to the river and vegetation. The second stage consisted of the evaluation of hatchlings and characterization of nests after egg hatching. The datawere tested using the Pearson Correlation to measure the degree of linear correlation between the variables analyzed, such as the parameters of females, hatchlings, nests, and eggs. Nest depth was positively correlated with the number of eggshells found. We also found a correlation between the number of eggsshells and the distance of nests to the vegetation. Although moderate, this result indicates that as the distance to the vegetation increases, the number of eggshells found in nests decreases. The spawning site for Amazon turtle breeding is crucial to determine a higher number of eggshatching and better development of hatchlings. However, the literature is still very scarce regarding the choice of spawning grounds and the influence that vegetation may have on the development of freshwater turtle hatchlingsin Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Learning about the biology of the species is essential to the success of intensive farming. This study aimed to evaluate the semen of Thai tilapia during the four seasons of the year and thereby analyze their reproductive indices. Thus, 60 breeding males of Tilapia were used and were randomly divided into four water tanks and fed with isoproteic and isocaloric feed. The experiment lasted 12 months, starting from October 2014 and ending on September 2015. Thus, it was possible to collect sperm material of animals during the four seasons, twice a month, as well as to evaluate the water quality parameters in the tanks (temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen). The semen was evaluated from a light microscope in an increase of 100 x, then was activated with water. Motility was measured subjectively in the light microscope, as well as the percentage of sperm showing progressive motility. The duration was evaluated with the addition of a timer. For analysis of the morphology of the semen, the test consisted of morphopathology observation of 100 sperm focused in various fields throughout the slide in the light microscope. Once obtained, these data were analyzed through ANOVA and Tukey test as post-hoc analysis, with the help of the software R Statistics. Water quality factors (temperature, pH and2dissolved) were acceptable and during the 12 month period the sperm of tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) had a good ability for fertilization, seen that it performed below the averageof the percentage of critical abnormalities, and quality was perceived by the parameters that also influence fertilization (motility rate, duration of motility and vigor).

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of the Podocnemis expansa nest transplantation technique used to aid in the conservation of the species, aiming to increase the number of individuals in nature. The Amazonian turtle is famous for its large size and commercial attractiveness, being the target of rampant hunting, mainly by populations that depend on the species economically. In September 2018, natural nests of P. expansa that were in areas of flood risk were excavated and transplanted into new nests constructed by the team. At the same time, the breeding females had their dimensions verified, as well as their respective eggs. In the second stage of the experiment, which occurred in November of the same year, the nests previously transplanted were counted, including the amount of eggshell, indicating how many eggs hatched, and measuring the size of the newborns, besides the presence of deformities. The sand collected from the bottom and surface of the natural and transplanted nests were analyzed by sieving. Through Pearson's correlation, the data were tested and related. No significant relationships were found between the birth rate and the grain size of the nests, which shows that grain size did not influence the success of hatching in the present study. It was found a strong relation (r = 0.80) between the number of eggs and the percentage of deformities of each transplanted nest, showing that the presence of deformed individuals in turtle nests is natural.

ABSTRACT

La sintaxis de búsqueda incluyó: "cannabis AND ADHD", "Attention-deficit/hyperactivity AND cannabis".

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a prevalence of 5% in children and adolescents and 2.5% in adults and is associated with high comorbidity with cannabis use disorder, other substance use and other psychiatric disorders. Objective: To determine the current scientific evidence on cannabis use and the development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Methodology: This was a systematic review of the literature. An online search of relevant publications was conducted in PubMed, CICCO and Web of Science databases. The search was limited to articles written in English or Spanish, between 2008 and 2019. The search syntax included: "cannabis AND ADHD", "Attention-deficit/hyperactivity AND cannabis". Results: 229 related publications were found. Most of the excluded texts corresponded to studies that did not report a causal relationship between cannabis and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which was the objective of this systematic review. Those full texts that presented cannabis as a treatment for the disorder or because they reported that people with this diagnosis were more prone to substance use were excluded. Discussion: Cannabis use reduces levels of striatal dopamine synthesis and is associated with deficits of executive function and synergistic reduction of dopamine, causing an exacerbation of the cognitive deficit related to attention deficit disorder or the use of cannabis itself. Also, cannabis use leads to the use of other drugs, which in turn produces an increase in symptoms of attention deficit disorder. The causal relationship of cannabis use and subsequent development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder should be studied further, since research on this particular aspect is few and inconclusive.
